Asian Group Encourages Participation In National Week of Action for Immigration Reform

Washington, DC--OCA, a national organization dedicated to advancing the social, political and economic well-being of Asian Pacific Americans (APAs), encourages members to participate in the National Asian American Pacific Islander week of action from January 12-20, 2010.

The National Asian American Pacific Islander week of action from January 12-20 is a collaborative effort among national, state and local AAPI organizations and allies to demonstrate the collective power and voice of Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders in the comprehensive immigration reform debate. Coordinated outreach and events across the nation will engage community members in the broader Reform Immigration FOR America campaign and show Congress that the AAPI community is serious about demanding reform this year.

“APAs are the fastest growing minority group in the U.S. and nearly 60% are immigrants. We have a stake in passing comprehensive immigration reform, and now is the time to take action to achieve reform that is fair, practical, and keeps families together,” said OCA National President Ken Lee.

OCA encourages its chapters to endorse the Reform Immigration FOR America campaign to strengthen the AAPI voice in the national immigration reform movement. Individual members can participate in the week of action by contacting their members of Congress, writing op-eds, and participating in a local event. To get started, text “AAPI” to 69866 to join a national cell phone action network that receives timely alerts and updates.

“OCA has long been involved in the fight for comprehensive immigration reform and has brought attention to issues that disproportionately affect the APA community, such as family reunification and immigrant integration. Now that Representative Gutierrez has introduced a comprehensive immigration reform bill that addresses these concerns, we hope that our chapters and members participate in this week of action to put pressure on Congress to pass the bill,” said OCA Executive Director George Wu.
