CHC Applauds Recent Obama Nominations
(Washington DC) – The Congressional Hispanic Caucus (CHC) applauds several nominations by President Barack Obama of highly qualified individuals from the Latino community to serve in Departments throughout his Administration. These latest appointments continue to prove that the President is committed to having an Executive Branch that reflects the diversity of our nation. The recent nominations by the President are: Gabriella Gomez, for Assistant Secretary for Legislation and Congressional Affairs, Department of Education; Kathy Martinez, for Assistant Secretary for Disability Employment Policy (ODEP), Department of Labor; Luis C. de Baca, for Ambassador-at-Large to Monitor and Combat Trafficking in Persons, State Department; and Marisa Demeo, for Associate Judge to the DC Superior Court.
“As the fastest growing minority population in the nation and with over 25 percent of the U.S. population expected to be Latinos by 2030, it is important that we are represented in all areas of the government and public life. These outstanding individuals will serve as examples for our community and evidence of the success and merits of our workforce,” said Congresswoman Nydia M. Velázquez, Chair of the CHC. “I commend President Obama for these appointments, and we will continue working with his Administration to identify Latino leaders who are ready to serve the nation.”
The CHC has forwarded recommendations to Administration officials for a variety of positions throughout the Departments and other agencies. The Ad Hoc Nominations Task Force was created to help identify individuals who are qualified and interested in working in the Executive Branch.
“As the Latino population continues to grow, The Obama Administration is rising to the challenge to meet the growing needs of the Latino community and positively shaping the leaders of tomorrow,” said Congressman Charles Gonzalez, 1st Vice Chair of the CHC and Chair of the Ad Hoc Nominations Committee. “The President must be commended for his recent appointments and continued efforts to place Latinos in leading roles. The new Administration, along with CHC, continues to foster a new level of involvement in Latinos that impacts the entire nation.”
