Press Conference at City Hall

Protesting ACS closing classes and eliminating kindergarten programs from day care centers

City Council General Welfare Committee Hearing at

Examines ACS 2009 plans for public day care

250 Broadway, 14th floor (bring photo ID)

ACS is closing all kindergarten classrooms in Day Care Centers eliminating educational services for thousands of young children mainly in neighborhoods of need. This displacement of these children from centers will result in thousands of additional 5 year olds forced to attend overcrowded public schools, many being bused to programs out of their neighborhood.

Over 3,300 slots will be eliminated from public child care programs while thousands of children remain unserved. These cuts will not only force many centers to close but will destabilize neighborhoods. Since workers at centers live near these programs, job loss will have a devastating effect on the local economy.
