GA SCLC To Re-enact Albany Movement March

ALBANY, Ga. — This year — 2011 — marks the 50th anniversary of the visit by Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. to Albany in an effort to rally local residents participating in what became the Albany Movement.

To celebrate the occasion, the Albany chapter of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference will re-enact the historic civil rights march Saturday in downtown Albany.

A formal program Saturday is planned to begin at 12:30 p.m. at Shiloh Baptist Church featuring a speech by the Rev. Samuel Mosteller, a is state president of the SCLC. Also attending will be Glenda Miller, Georgia SCLC vice president.

The march re-enactment will begin at 2:30 p.m. Saturday at Shiloh and will lead to downtown Albany.

“We plan for this to be a teaching/learning experience for our young people,” local SCLC Chairman John White said. “Those who are 49 years old or younger were not born in 1961, and therefore have never had personal experiences of a civil rights march.
