Film Chronicles the Reasons Behind the Rise of
Gang Culture in South Central Los Angeles

Exclusive Capitol Hill Screening, Hosted by U.S. Representatives Bobby Scott (D-VA) and Mike Castle (R-DE), Will Take Place on Wednesday, May 6,
to Address Issues Facing At-Risk Youth

(San Francisco, CA)-In the southern portion of the richest city in the richest state in America, a civil war has been raging for more than 40 years. This war has taken more than 15,000 lives, and it passes its legacy from father to son. The battlefield is South Central Los Angeles, an area surrounded by geographical icons of California-Rodeo Drive, Hollywood and Vine, the beaches of Santa Monica, and Disneyland. The most violent outbreaks of civil unrest in U.S. history have erupted on its streets twice-27 years and just three miles apart.

But what's at the root of this long-standing battle? In CRIPS AND BLOODS: Made in America, filmmaker Stacy Peralta hits the streets of South Central Los Angeles to find out, and in so doing, speaks with former and current members of the Bloods and the Crips, two of the most notorious and violent street gangs in America.

Narrated by Forest Whitaker and produced by Cash Warren and Los Angeles NBA star Baron Davis, the acclaimed documentary will premiere on the PBS series Independent Lens, hosted by Terrence Howard, on Tuesday, May 12, 2009, at 10 PM (check local listings).

On May 6, 2009, a week before the film's national premiere on PBS, U.S. Representatives Bobby Scott (D-VA) and Mike Castle (R-DE) will host a Capitol Hill screening of CRIPS AND BLOODS: Made in America for members of Congress. Director Peralta and producers Davis and Warren will be in attendance for a discussion and dialogue around the issues facing at-risk youth.

"We are honored that Congressmen Scott and Castle have taken an interest in this timely and important film about gang violence and the challenges and needs of inner-city youth," said series producer Lois Vossen. "Interest in this groundbreaking film highlights the unique perspectives that only independent media can provide on today's key social issues."
