Juan de Marcos and the Afro-Cuban All Stars appear at Tilles Center for the Performing Arts on Friday, March 27 at 8 pm in an exciting concert devoted to the richness, diversity and vitality of Cuban music.

            Juan de Marcos González and his band were the core of the worldwide phenomenon, Buena Vista Social Club, featured in historic concerts at Carnegie Hall and later at Tilles Center. One of the most important figures in Cuban music today, González raised the worldwide profile of Cuban music through his work with the Afro-Cuban All Stars, the Buena Vista Social Club, Sierra Maestra, Rubén González, Ibrahim Ferrer and others. His creation of the Afro-Cuban All Stars was the realization of a dream to put together a band combining the old masters and the new generation of Cuban musicians. González said: “I wanted to mix the generations so there is the experience of the older guys and the energy of the younger players.” He recruited his dream team that included singers Manuel Puntillita Licea and Pío Leyva, the legendary pianist Rubén González and bass player Orlando Cachaito López. The All Stars have conducted tours throughout Europe and the U.S. Independently and as a group these musicians have recorded several albums, among them Distinto, diferente. “We have to use all of the heritage of Cuban music to create a sound of the future,” said González, adding “it’s important to have that continuity and to fight for the identity of Cuban music.”

            Tickets for Juan de Marcos and the Afro-Cuban All Stars, at Tilles Center on Friday, March 27 at 8 pm, are $65, $45, $30 (seniors: $62, $42, $27)
