Latino event at Moffitt Cancer Center to educate community on cancer screening and prevention

TampaFL (June 30, 2009) – In an effort to raise awareness and educate the Latino community, Moffitt Cancer Center and Sweetbay Supermarket present “¡Salud! Serie de charlas,” a free program developed by Latinos to be delivered entirely in Spanish. The first of this four-part series is July 18 from 8:30 a.m. to 11:10 a.m. at the Stabile ResearchBuilding in the Ted and Marty Couch Auditorium.

A panel of five Spanish-speaking Moffitt and community physicians will present on health topics, followed by an opportunity for audience members to ask questions. Areas of discussion include prostate health and cancer, colon cancer and prevention, emotional well-being, coping skills, general health topics and a patient testimonial. There will also be literature on a wide range of related topics for attendees to take home.

The value of this event is the information that is going to be shared with the community and the awareness it’s going to raise,” Prado Antolino, coordinator of translation services, said. “We hope to empower the community to advocate for themselves and have information they need to take care of their own health.”

Upon arrival, participants can enjoy a light breakfast and will receive a raffle ticket to be eligible for gifts such as Florida Aquarium tickets and baseball caps. Please call 1-888-MOFFITT to make a reservation for this event.
