Migrant Workers To Be Focus Of Health Program

CHARLESTON, SC - The National Association For Continence (NAFC) along with Natividad Medical Foundation and Clinica de Salud del Valle de Salinas (CSVS) will be hosting an educational forum in Spanish for migrant farm workers in Monterey County, California on Monday, October 11 at César Chávez Elementary School, located at 1225 Towt Street in Salinas, CA, from 6-8 p.m. This event is being held in concurrence with Binational Health Week (BWH), an outreach program comprised of community-based organizations and volunteers to improve the health and well being of the immigrant and migrant populations living in the United States, taking place October 4-15.

This educational event is made possible by grants from the Medtronic Foundation for NAFC’s continuing outreach to Hispanic communities and from Ethicon Women’s Health & Urology, division of Ethicon, Inc., a Johnson & Johnson company. The program will feature presentations made by native speaking gynecologists, family medicine physicians and nurse practitioners aimed at providing education and guidance about bladder and bowel control problems including pelvic organ prolapse and the importance of diet and weight management. General health and wellness will be addressed as well, including the prevention of diabetes and heart disease, for which Hispanics are at higher risk than non-Hispanics. Attendees will also be instructed on how to seek diagnosis and treatment for symptoms at local area clinics, as obstacles to access are numerous for this underserved population. SRS Medical and CooperSurgical have pledged to donate pessaries to medical facilities where women are diagnosed with prolapse and can benefit from non-surgical interventions. The overall goal is to facilitate improved health and a better quality of life for migrant farm workers with temporary work visas in this country. Driscoll’s, the world’s largest marketer and distributor of fresh berries, is assisting in publicity and local organization of the event.

All Spanish-speaking residents of this area are welcome to attend this free event. Childcare and food will be provided.
