New Data on Medicaid Physician Fees, State Fiscal Distress, the Medicaid Federal Matching Rate, Medicare Advantage

Data Update

Statehealthfacts.org has recently added new and updated data on Demographics and the Economy, Medicaid & CHIP, Medicare, Managed Care & Health Insurance, and Women’s Health. You can also view a list of all recent updates.

Demographics & the Economy

  • Unemployment
    The most recent information from the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) on unemployment rates has been added for all states and the nation for March 2009.
  • Food Stamp Program
    The latest data from the United States Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) Food and Nutrition Service on monthly food stamp enrollment are now available for all states and the nation for February 2009.
  • State Fiscal Distress
    Aggregate state rankings in foreclosures, unemployment, and food stamp participation have been updated with foreclosures data from RealtyTrac as of April 2009, the most recent unemployment data from the BLS, and the latest food stamp enrollment data from the USDA. State budget shortfalls data have been updated based on the most recent information from the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities as of May 13, 2009.

Medicaid & CHIP

  • Federal Matching Rate (FMAP)
    New data on the Federal Matching Rate (FMAP) for Medicaid in fiscal year (FY) 2009 reflecting increases from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) are now available for all states and the nation.
  • CHIP
    The latest state-by-state information from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) on total CHIP expenditures, including state and federal shares, is now available for FY2008.
  • Medicaid Physician Fees
    Updated information on Medicaid physician fees based on an Urban Institute survey conducted in partnership with the Kaiser Commission on Medicaid and the Uninsured has been added for all states and the nation for 2008, including a relative Medicaid fee index for each state and a Medicaid-to-Medicare fee index. Also available is the percentage change in Medicaid fees by type of service for 2003-2008.

Medicare

  • Medicare Prescription Drug Plans (PDPs)
    Mathematica Policy Research analysis of 2009 CMS monthly PDP enrollment data are now available for all states and the nation. Updated topics include PDP penetration, average PDP premium by type, and percentage of PDPs with a standard deductible.
  • Medicare Advantage (MA)
    The most recent information on Medicare Advantage (MA), including total enrollment, MA plan penetration, and special needs plan offerings, is now available for 2009 based on Mathematica Policy Research analysis of CMS data.
  • Medicare Service Use
    New state-by-state data on Medicare fee-for-service patients who were re-hospitalized within thirty days after hospital discharge have been added for 2004, based on an analysis by Jenks et al. published in the April 2, 2009, New England Journal of Medicine in an article titled "Rehospitalizations among Patients in the Medicare Fee-for-Service Program."

Managed Care & Health Insurance

  • High Risk Pools
    New and updated data on high risk pools from the Health Policy Institute of Georgetown University are now available for all states and the nation. Updated topics include high risk pool costs, enrollment, and financing arrangements as of December 2007, and high risk pool eligibility requirements and portability rules as of January 2009. State-level data for February 2009 on high risk pool premiums history (2002-2009), covered benefits, and rating rules have been added as new topics.
  • Protections in Small Group Markets
    New information on health insurance subsidies in the small group market as of March 2009 and standardized plans in the small group market as of January 2009 is now available for all states and the nation based on Health Policy Institute research.
  • Protections in Individual Insurance Markets
    Also new from the Health Policy Institute are data on health insurance subsidies and standardized plans in the individual insurance market as of March 2009 for all states and the nation.
  • Mental Health Coverage
    New state-by-state information from the Health Policy Institute on mental health coverage mandates in the small group market and the individual market has been added as of January 2009.
  • Tax Incentives
    Also added from the Health Policy Institute are new data on state tax credits for private health insurance for all states and the nation for January 2009.

Women’s Health

  • Mandated Benefits in Private Insurance
    New data on the mandated coverage of infertility treatment and maternity care are now available from the Georgetown University Health Policy Institute for all states and the nation for January 2009.
