Obama States Race Not Cause of Health Care Anger

The president spoke Friday to CNN about race as a factor in the debate over health care.

Press Release Service – Wired PR News – President Barack Obama spoke Friday to CNN about recent allegations that those angry over his health care plan were motivated by issues with his race. As reported by the Associated Press (AP), Obama expressed his belief that his race was not the source of overall anger over the plan to the media.

The nation’s first African American president is quoted by the AP as stating to CNN, “Are there people out there who don’t like me because of race? I’m sure there are… That’s not the overriding issue here.” Obama further stated, “There’s been a long-standing debate in this country that is usually that much more fierce during times of transition, or when presidents are trying to bring about big changes.”

The president spoke about the issue following former president Jimmy Carter’s assertions that many who staunchly oppose Obama’s health care initiative, and express their opposition in intense anger, have issues about Obama’s race.
