Cyclists Gear Up for Bike MS McCall: Road, Sweat & Gears – August 18-19
, July 23 /Businesswire/ - The countdown is on for Bike MS: Road, Sweat & Gears on August 18-19 in McCall, Idaho. The annual event, benefiting the National Multiple Sclerosis Society, connects people passionate about cycling and supporting a great cause – a cure for MS and helping Idahoans impacted by the disease.
“Each mile pedaled and every dollar raised by Bike MS participants is truly making a difference,” said Becky Lyttle, vice president of community development for the local Chapter of the Society. “It is helping to fund important research, improve the lives of those affected and letting the MS community know people care. Plus, it is a fun summer weekend in a beautiful setting with friends both old and new.”
Bike MS attracts a mix of cyclists from those seeking a personal challenge and those who enjoy the camaraderie of riding in a group to the many touched by MS. Participants also aim to meet a fundraising goal (minimum $250), of which 86 cents of every dollar raised, an amount above the national average, goes directly to support the cause.
“This is my first year doing Bike MS,” said Rex Parker from Boise. “I am relatively new to road cycling but am riding for a couple of reasons – in honor of my late brother who passed away from complications caused by MS and also my own personal journey of a healthier lifestyle.”
The two-day ride, suitable for a mix of abilities with routes ranging from 20 to 135 miles, is fully supported with rest stops, support vehicles and meals.
Every hour in the U.S. someone is newly diagnosed with multiple sclerosis, an unpredictable, often disabling disease of the central nervous system. More than 2.1 million people worldwide and more than 400,000 Americans are affected. It is believed one in 300 Idahoans live with the disease.
