10 States with Highest Unemployment among Young People See Surge in New Gen Y Mary Kay Independent Beauty Consultants

DALLAS , August 09 /Businesswire/ - “I just can’t find a job.” That’s what more and more young people across the country are saying.

With 1 out of every 2 new college graduates unemployed or underemployed and the monthly national job reports from the Department of Labor, the outlook for traditional employment options are bleak for Gen Y. The situation is even worse in some areas of the country, according to 24/7 Wall St., an independent research company that reviewed historical unemployment data for the U.S. population to identify the 10 states with the most unemployed young people. According to 24/7 Wall St., young people in Mississippi, Alabama, South Carolina, North Carolina, Tennessee, Kentucky, Washington, California, West Virginia and Nevada have the highest rate of unemployment.

At the same time when traditional job opportunities in these 10 states have become harder for young people to find, Mary Kay saw nearly 20,000 people aged 18-30 in these states start Mary Kay businesses in 2012. Lindsey Christenson, a 23-year-old from Washington, started selling Mary Kay products to earn extra money.

“I was working two jobs, going to school full time and trying to start a wedding planning business,” Christenson said. “My main goal was to not have any debt, so I didn’t mind working hard to live debt-free.
