"Premio Lo Nuestro," the highest-rated special each season among Hispanics in the United States, bestows awards annually to the winners from the five most popular Latin music genres - Pop, Tropical, Regional Mexican, Rock and Urban - and Video of the Year. The upcoming awards gala will also include a new and first ever "Entertainer of the Year" (Artista Premio Lo Nuestro del Ano) category, as well as a new "Collaboration of the Year" (Colaboracion del Ano) which includes artists from all genres.

Nominees were selected from charts compiled by Nielsen Broadcast Data Systems (BDS), the world's leading provider of airplay tracking for the entertainment industry for the time period of October 1, 2008 to September 30, 2009. Winners are determined by popular vote. Last year's edition of "Premio Lo Nuestro a la Musica Latina" set a new audience record reaching 12.5 million viewers who watched some or all of the broadcast. It also delivered more Hispanic viewers than the combined audiences of the 2009 editions of the Academy Awards(R), Golden Globes(R), Emmy(R) Awards and MTV Video Music Awards(R).
