R&B ARTIST, LOVELY HOFFMAN, TAKES THREE BOSTON AREA STUDENTS ON EDUCATIONAL TRIP TO UGANDA, EAST AFRICA

Lovely Hoffman

Boston, MA (BlackNews.com) - Budding new R&B artist Lovely Hoffman is preparing for an overseas journey on April 16, 2009 in which she is taking three students from Smith Leadership Academy, a charter school in Boston, MA., on a 11 day trip to Uganda, East Africa; the region where the first human remains were discovered. More than just a getaway, the trip is about learning the culture of Uganda and about promoting community leadership. They will visit the capital city of Kampala and students will be introduced to the trades and crafts of jewelry making, tie dying and drumming. The students will also learn about the customs of the native people and visit the Nile River as well as the Equator all in effort to educate them culturally, socially and historically.

This trip to Uganda is made possible thanks to Lovely's own diligent efforts, often times performing at local events and gigs to help finance the trip's cost. Cooperatively, along with parents, bake sales and donation drives were organized to raise funds. Lovely's main purpose in organizing this trip is to create an opportunity to show students that Africa is beautiful. As well as dispel the negative stereotypes often associated with the continent and let them understand it's the place where their ancestors come from. Lovely says, "This trip is about community building...developing pride, a love of self, and connecting to the land we are so far removed from. I want to inspire children to make change in their community. I do this to expose them to the land we come from, teach them about colonization and how "Africans" in America lost their traditions, values and cultural practices." Furthermore she says, "This trip is part of my effort to serve my community and inspire our children to become leaders."

As an R&B artist Lovely writes music to inspire and educate. Last year she released her promotional single "Motherland," an educational song in which she skillfully rhymes each country and capital of Africa in sing-a-long fashion that aids in memory and recall as well as in phonetic pronunciations. The release of the single was part of a larger crusade in which she took six students to Senegal, West Africa. Students visited Goree Island to experience first hand the torment and inhumane conditions of their African ancestors during the Atlantic Slave Trade.

Lovely Hoffman hails from Boston's Roxbury Orchard Park neighborhood, the same neighborhood that bred R&B super group New Edition. She gained notoriety with the release of her debut single "Can't Wait." The single peaked at number ten on RapAttacks, the national Urban College Radio Charts and appeared on a number of popular DJ mixtapes. Lovely has also graced the stage performing along side fellow R&B artists Ne-Yo, T-Pain, Jaheim as well as many others.

Recently, Lovely released her new single, "Light Switch," a tune about unstable relationships. She finished shooting the music video and is arranging promotional appearances and performances to support its release. To preview Lovely's music please visit myspace.com/LovelyHoffman
