WASHINGTON, D.C.—The U.S. Chamber of Commerce’s Africa Business Initiative, on the heels of successful participation and sponsorship of the African Growth and Opportunity Act (AGOA) Forum in Kenya, will join U.S. Trade Representative Ron Kirk for a meeting with the Ethiopian Prime Minister Meles Zenawi this Saturday to discuss the expansion of U.S.-Ethiopian trade.
“African nations are some of the most important trading partners for U.S. companies,” said Scott Eisner, executive director of the Chamber’s Africa Business Initiative. “In addition to commercial interests, we cannot forget the geopolitical importance of countries such as Ethiopia. We must continue to work with USTR and other partners in new and innovative ways to help expand foreign direct investment into Africa and build upon the great opportunities that AGOA has provided American and African companies.”
Ahead of the meeting with Prime Minister Meles, the U.S. Chamber will join the Office of the U.S. Trade Representative and the Minority and Majority Trade Counsel for the U.S. House Ways and Means Committee in a tour of textile, apparel, and shoe manufacturing facilities in Ethiopia. The Chamber and AmCham Ethiopia will also host Ambassador Kirk on August 8, 2009 for a luncheon speech where he will address the expansion of trade opportunities with the region.
