CA Candidate's Urged To 'Report To Jail'

LOS ANGELES - Maria Elena Durazo, the leader of the Los Angeles labor movement, called Meg Whitman’s hiring of an undocumented housekeeper “the ultimate in hypocrisy.”

“Up to now Meg Whitman has been completely two-faced in her campaign. In English media, she champions her anti-immigrant credentials. In her Spanish ads, she says she’s a friend of Latinos and immigrants.

But now, if there’s such a thing as being ‘three-faced,’ Meg Whitman has done it. She said last night in her debate with Jerry Brown that employers need to be penalized for hiring undocumented workers and that we need stronger enforcement directed at business. Apparently, Meg Whitman believes that only applies to other businesses, not her own.

If Whitman truly believes in stronger workplace enforcement of immigration laws, she should set an example and voluntarily report to jail.”

Maria Elena Durazo is executive secretary-treasurer of the Los Angeles County Federation of Labor, AFL-CIO.
