DC CLERGY UNITED FOR MARRIAGE EQUALITY

DC CLERGY UNITED FOR MARRIAGE EQUALITY

Coalition of Religious Leaders Forms in Support of Same-Sex Marriage Rights

What: Press Conference announcing the formation of a coalition of Washington, DC, clergy representing many faiths, races, ethnicities and dozens of congregations across the city in support of marriage equality.

Where:      Covenant Baptist Church, 3845 South Capitol St SW, Washington

When:       Tuesday, June 2, 2009, 11:00 am

Speakers:  To be Announced on Monday

Background: Faith leaders representing congregations in every ward of Washington are forming a coalition to give voice to people of faith who support full marriage equality.

Against the backdrop of growing national momentum for full marriage equality, the issue has come to the forefront locally as legislation recently passed the DC City Council which would allow same-sex marriages performed in other states to be recognized in the District.

The newly formed coalition of faith leaders have worked together for many years on a variety of other social justice issues, and are now uniting to voice broad religious support for marriage equality.

In addition, members of the clergy will call for a civil and respectful debate in the months ahead, recognizing that people of faith may have differing views on the issue – but can always agree on treating one another with dignity and compassion.
