Latino Elected Officials Gather In Washington This Week For Conference

 WASHINGTON--(BUSINESS WIRE)--The National Association of Latino Elected and Appointed Officials (NALEO) Educational Fund today announced that U.S. Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano and U.S. Labor Secretary Hilda Solís will participate in NALEO’s 27th Annual Conference June 24-26 in Denver. The NALEO Conference is the largest gathering of Latino elected and appointed officials in the nation.

U.S. Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano will address the issue of immigration during the NALEO Conference Leadership Luncheon on Thursday, June 24 from 11:00 a.m. - 12:30 p.m.

U.S. Labor Secretary Hilda L. Solís will address a town hall meeting focusing on energy, on Friday, June 25 from 9:00 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. Secretary Solís will speak about the importance of developing a workforce prepared to meet the energy demands of the 21st century, among other topics. Secretary Solís will be joined by former Energy Secretary and former Denver Mayor Federico Peña for this discussion.

Other top executive and legislative leaders speaking at the conference include Assistant Attorney General for Civil Rights Thomas Pérez, Housing and Urban Development Assistant Secretary John Trasviña, Colorado Governor Bill Ritter, Jr., Colorado Lt. Governor Barbara O’Brien, Colorado Attorney General John Suthers, former Colorado House Speaker Andrew Romanoff, Denver Mayor John Hickenlooper, and Reps. John Salazar and Lucille Roybal-Allard.

This year’s conference theme is “Preserving American’s Promise.” The 2010 NALEO Annual Conference program will provide a unique source of professional development specifically tailored for Latino elected and appointed officials. Sessions at the conference are designed to enhance the governance skills of participants and deepen their understanding of critical policy issues. The conference will also feature the results of a comprehensive national poll of the Latino community, and sessions on Arizona’s new immigration law, education, energy and healthcare, among others.
