National Action Network's Black Leadership Forum Draws Prominent Black Leaders

Syracuse, NY- Dr. Boyce Watkins, a prominent social commentator and professor at Syracuse University, will gather with other prominent African American leaders such as the NAACP President, Ben Jealous, Al Sharpton, and Tom Joyner for the National Action Network (NAN) to be panelists at a nationally televised Black Leadership Forum on CSPAN. Various heavy weights in the African American community such as Roland Martin, Marc Morial, Charles Ogletree, Judge Greg Mathis, and Chuck D. Well known celebrities such as Mariah Carey, WyClef Jon, and BET Personality, Jeff Johnson will also be in attendance. The agenda for the convention is to emphasize education reform as the Civil Rights issue of the 21st Century. The convention will also address topics such as health reform, criminal justice, issues facing our youth, along with media and corporate responsibility.

Dr. Watkins states, “You don’t have to go to college to know that America’s educational system is as embarrassing as our bloated, expensive health care system.”  He has been advocating for improving this nation’s educational system for years and thus, his participation in the Black Leadership Forum is very significant.

Dr. Boyce Watkins is aware that education is the key to success. This is why he has earned BA and BS degrees with a triple major in Finance, Economics and Business Management. In fact, while in college, he was selected by the Wall Street Journal as the Outstanding Graduating Senior in Finance. He then earned a Masters Degree in Mathematical Statistics from The University of Kentucky and a PhD in Finance from The Ohio State University and was the only African-American in the world to earn a PHD in Finance during the year 2002.

“Such wide-scale dysfunction inevitably undermines the integrity of America’s competitive future,” says Watkins about our current education system. He is aware that in order to have a successful nation, its citizens must to be well educated.

This is why Dr. Watkins has created Educational Excellence Contract, which is a set of programs that involve a personal commitment to educational excellence and asks students to rise to the challenge of top-notch academic performance.

Dr. Watkins will appear on the Panel on Saturday, April 17, 2010 at 9:00 a.m. in conjunction with NAN’s Annual National Convention in New York City, April 14 -17, 2010.
