A few weeks ago, the New York Times front page delivered the news – despite the Obama Presidency, there had been “No Smooth Ride on TV Networks’ Road to Diversity.” Two new shows featuring minority leads were canceled before their six month anniversary and an NAACP analysis reported a sharp drop in the number of minority actors on all but one broadcast network. Against this backdrop, I’d like to introduce you to a new and landmark broadcast network that is in the works – the New Paradigm Broadcasting Network or NPBN. NPBN’s target audiences are African Americans and Hispanics, and it will be the nation’s first African American-owned broadcast network. The network has the most innovative, positive and community-centered programming in production today. Instead of offering viewers skewed and hackneyed portrayals, NPBN will reflect the untold yet everyday reality of millions of Latinos and African Americans while celebrating and addressing the unique aspects of both communities. While NPBN content will have universal appeal to viewers from across the cultural and societal spectrum, it will focus on programming that speaks to the needs, concerns, and experiences helping to fill a void that has persisted for decades.
