Statement by Secretary Duncan on Black-White Achievement Gaps
July 15, 2009
This report makes clear that schools matter and when schools serving children of color are primarily staffed by less experienced, less effective teachers, the effects are tragic. USAID report Improving Maternal, Newborn & Child Health
June 17, 2009
Since 1990, through USAID, the United States has spent more than $6 billion on child survival programs in about 80 countries. Much of the progress is the result of the widespread adoption of basic health interventions, such as early and exclusive breast feeding, measles and other routine immunizations, polio eradication, Vitamin A supplementation, treatment of child illness, antenatal care, safe delivery, postpartum care, newborn care, and the use of insecticide-treated bed nets to prevent malaria ...

National Trust for Historic Preservation Names Dorchester Academy in Midway, Georgia, to its 2009 List of America's 11 Most End
April 28, 2009
The story of Dorchester Academy, one of the earliest schools for African Americans in the state of Georgia and a National Historic Landmark, is forever linked to the cultural and political forces that shaped our nation's history. Founded in 1871 as a school for freed slaves, Dorchester started humbly in a one-room schoolhouse with a student body ranging in age from eight to 80.
