KENNESAW, Ga., April 2, 2020 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ -- Today, the Friends of Lisa Campbell, Inc. announces that Lisa Campbell, candidate for the Georgia House of Representatives District 35, has been endorsed by the Georgia WIN List. Georgia WIN List is the state's leading Political Action Committee for electing Democratic women and celebrates its 20th anniversary this year. The group has helped elect more than 70 endorsed women to the Georgia General Assembly, 44 of whom serve currently.

"I am honored to be endorsed by the GA WIN List," Campbell said, noting "Democratic women candidates outnumber our Republican colleagues more than three to one. This is a very positive sign because I firmly believe that the only way to achieve equality is to demand greater diversity in our leadership until we have a system that accurately reflects our population and is designed to ensure all perspectives are heard."

The newly released endorsed women include six who seek open or Republican-held seats and 14 currently serving legislators previously endorsed by the group who face challenges and should be "protected" in November, according to WIN List Vice Chair Laura Register of Cairo. "Record numbers of women candidates have qualified for the 2020 election cycle, with 118 of the 136 contested legislative races having a woman on the ballot," Register said.

"The six newly endorsed women are talented, well-educated and present the opportunity for strategically important flipped seats or Democratic WINs," Register said. "We are excited about how quickly they have adjusted their campaign plans to the social restrictions imposed by the current national pandemic. These resourceful women have well-planned campaigns. Once elected, we know they will be strong and effective advocates for progressive policies."

The six women endorsed by GA WIN List today include:

HD 35 – Lisa Campbell

SD 9 – Nikki Merritt

SD 45 – Matielyn Jones

HD 74 – Yasmin Neal

HD 91 – Rhonda Taylor

HD 163 – Anne Allen Westbrook

"In 2018, Georgia WIN List endorsed women won 13 legislative seats, including FLIPS, which shifted the Cobb, Fulton and Gwinnett delegations from red to blue," says WIN List Executive Director Melita Easters. "In addition to electing new women, we must also protect the women who currently serve, particularly those who FLIPped seats in 2018. Some have been targeted by Republicans since the votes giving them victory were certified in 2018."

Easters shared that in the 56-member Georgia Senate, 30 races feature women candidates in either the primary or general election, with 10 of those races featuring challenges to currently serving women. In the 180-member house, there are 88 races with women candidates and 33 of those are challenges to currently serving women.
