Washington, DC Chapter of Women of Global Change Launches Initiatives to Support Women and Children Facing the Coming Eviction Tsunami

New Women of Global Change Chapter in Washington, DC highlights the need to support vulnerable families in DC, Maryland, and Virginia as potential wave of evictions looms.

PR Newswire

WASHINGTON, Oct. 19, 2020 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ -- As many as 35 million people in the United States could be facing eviction, including 31 to 42 percent of renters in the Washington, DCMarylandVirginia (DMV) area. Many of those most at risk are women who are disproportionately experiencing job loss and health risks due to the COVID-19 pandemic and its effects. The new DMV Chapter of The Women of Global Change (WGC) aims to put women and girls in the national capital region in the forefront of creating soft landings for women and children facing the terrible prospect of being unhoused, and supporting their achievement of income and housing stability.

Led by Chapter President, Valarie Davis, the WGC DMV Chapter will deliver right-now-relevant supports and services in partnership with local not-for-profit organizations with boots already on the ground – amplifying their work in providing essential daily hygiene and household items for women and children, and making holiday "magic" providing gifts for children whose parents are unable to do so due to home and income losses. Girls and women of diverse ages, cultures, ethnicities, and backgrounds are coming together on equal footing to address this unprecedented catastrophic crisis in tangible, practical, and systemic ways. Novel challenges, like COVID-19 sometimes demand novel solutions, and that's what this looming eviction tsunami requires on a systemic level. What if we could build a network of partners who store the belongings of unhoused families while they get back on their feet? Starting over with nothing is much worse than starting over with something. That's the type of bold, innovative thinking we are applying to make positive change right where we live, and it reflects the kind of heart and collaboration we look forward to from other servant leaders who join our chapter.

"In the Covid era, more and more challenges continue to present themselves. The trials and tribulations of 2020 have challenged us all to become leaders for ourselves and our communities. In the Washington, DC-Maryland-Virginia area, the Women of Global Change is blessed to have leaders such as new DMV Chapter President, Valarie Davis, take these challenges head on. While the DMV chapter officially launches on October 24th, Valarie Davis and her chapter committee have already made community partnerships, identified unique ways to serve, and begun building a motivated team of WGC members ready to bring authentic change to those in need. With an emphasis on supporting the most vulnerable through this eviction crisis, the DMV Chapter has already begun to demonstrate the value and mission of the Women of Global Change." –Shellie Hunt, WGC Founder and CEO.
