First all-female artist gallery 'Inside HER STUDIO' now open in Houston

First all-female artist gallery 'Inside HER STUDIO' now open in Houston

The first of its kind platform gives womxn a place to showcase their art, connect with others, and have guidance to a successful art business. Inside HER STUDIO was created and curated by Magen Pastor, Houston-native who lives between Houston, TX and Denver, CO.

PR Newswire

HOUSTON, Nov. 24, 2020 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ -- HOUSTON'S FIRST ALL-FEMALE ARTIST GALLERY NOW OPEN

POP-UP NOW OPEN IN RICE VILLAGE THROUGH DEC 31

WHAT

Inside HER STUDIO is Houston's first all-female pop-up art gallery and consultancy dedicated exclusively to elevating the work of femxle artists. The concept was created and curated by Magen Pastor to promote inclusiveness of womxn in the arts and uplift this historically marginalized segment of the artist community. The pop-up exhibition is one of many to come that will be a representation of art by women around the country.

The debut gallery showcases original works of traditional paintings and three-dimensional art by 8 multicultural women, all Houston-based, between the ages of 16 and 65: Anat Ronen, Laura Goodson, Lesli Gaworecki, Meredith O'Neal, Olga Saldivar, Sevy Marie Eicher, Shelbi Nicole, and Vivian Pastor.

All art is available for safe, in-person viewing and contactless purchase. The gallery can also be viewed and shopped online.

Houston Texas, 77005

WHEN

Showing through December 31, 2020 (free to attend)

Monday-Saturday, 10am-8pm

Sunday, 12pm-6pm

WHY

The concept was created to address the systemic inequities still faced by female and femme artists in the art world. A 2019 study called attention to the fact that among 18 prominent museums in the United States, 87% of the artists in their collections are men, and a study conducted by the Association of Art Museum Directors (AAMD) found that women hold less than 50% of directorships, and the average female director's salary lags behind that of the average male director. Additionally, 96% of artwork sold at auction are by male artists. Inside HER STUDIO addresses these inequities and gives a voice to femxles in the art world.

An exclusive community program was developed by Pastor specifically for female-identifying artists that includes access to exhibition space, collector networking, and strategic marketing and consulting. The membership is designed to empower artists to support themselves with their work.

"My hope is that this platform provides female artists at any stage of their career knowledge and guidance through consultancy to make their art business a success," said Pastor. "The art gallery is part of a bigger platform and new marketplace that will also serve as an integrated community where curators, brands, and collectors can source from a broad selection of female artists and their work. All female-identifying artists should feel valued, heard, seen, and ultimately supported, and I'm offering a solution to bridge that gap."

Pastor is planning subsequent shows which she hopes to take to Chicago, Denver, Austin, and other art-centric destinations and will launch courses in early 2021. Artists interested in consultancy and membership with Inside HER STUDIO can visit http://www.insideherstudio.com for more information.

THE ARTISTS

ANAT RONEN is a Houston based self-taught artist. Her work is found throughout the Greater Houston, Texas area, including public spaces like interstate highways, bridges, buildings, churches, and schools. Additionally, her work is displayed in museums and select shows nationwide and all the way to India, China and Australia. Her murals are painted using latex or acrylic and brushes. On the ground it's chalk and/or tempera. She also dubs in other media from time to time. In addition to Ronen's mural work, she participates in international street painting and street art festivals nationwide and around the world, and is fluent in the English, Hebrew, and Spanish languages. Ronen says, "I am a multi-disciplinary artist and I love to share my gift with the world!" - Follow on social media at AnatRonen1971.

LAURA GOODSON'S work is a modern representation of western figures of the past and occasionally their unforgiving landscapes. Her work is dominated by bold hat-wearing cowboys - she brings to life the cowboys, caballeros, bandits, and outlaws. She lets the depth of her characters and their journey come through bold lines and hard shadowing to emphasize physical pain and grit that is only a portal to emotional discourse and hardship. Goodson herself, a gender outlaw, only paints masculine figures riddled with humility, sadness, guilt, misdirection and heartbreak; two-dimensionally delivering layers of loss and the power of resilience. Laura's work is monochrome; she allows the lack of color to represent a distinct line between good and evil and show how, without changing a palette, a piece could be good or evil, without changing a soul, a person can display good or evil, or a bit of both but never at the same time. LESLIE GAWORECKI is a photographer turned abstract artist based in Houston, Texas. After moving often and living abroad for much of her youth, she received a Bachelor's of Fine Arts in photography from The Ohio State University and found her way back to Texas. Leslie spent the next decade photographing people and events internationally and teaching herself to paint. In 2016 she began showing paintings in her Houston studio and in exhibitions within the city. Mostly acrylic with some mixed media, Leslie's painting is a practice driven by color and the surprises that happen when she releases expectation. Leslie lives with her husband and four sons who inspire her mark-making and her tendency toward whimsy. Leslie Gaworecki's work explores longing for place - places from the past, places called home, unseen places of the future. Unplanned and abstracted, these paintings hold memories and fantasies. They are emotional landscapes of the imagination in a personal search for belonging and "home". Follow on social media at LeslieGaworecki.

MEREDITH O'NEAL'S artistic passion for painting started in her first year of college. She planned to major in art, drawing at the time while paint felt intimidating. She took a summer painting class and fell in love with the lush way of oil paint, its movement and colors, giving her clarity and solidified the feeling that this would be her passion and lifelong career. After earning her undergraduate degree at Texas State in both Painting and Photography, O'neal moved to California to pursue a Masters Degree in Painting at the San Francisco Art Institute in 2012. She now lives in the Houston area with her husband and two young children, and is working as a full time artist. When O'neal is not enjoying her ranch in Huntsville, she can be found on nature walks exploring the grounds, observing wildlife, and collecting old cow bones and plants. OLGA SALDIVAR was born in Monterey, Mexico and is a Texas-based artist, illustrator, and designer. Her artwork blends traditional techniques with whimsical elements creating an edge between innocence, beauty, and mystery. She has worked with different mediums during her career as an artist. Whether she's painting, or working with ceramics or leather, Saldivar always incorporates the key element of texture in her creations, and is extremely inspired by nature. SEVY MARIE EICHER is a 16-year-old internationally collected artist with downs syndrome who is finding her voice daily through brilliant works of abstract art. Eicher was born in Sofia, Bulgaria - because she was born with an extra chromosome, in a place where she would never be accepted, she spent the first twelve years of her life in institutions. Her beginning was hard and filled with hurt and trauma. But in 2016, she was finally found and brought home to her forever family in Texas where she is now loved immensely, living a life full of joy and adventure. Her family recognized her love for art from the beginning. She has flourished as an artist and has found her voice through her work. Follow on social media at SevyMarieEicher.

SHELBI NICOLE is a Houston-based artist, designer, and muralist with her paintings both collected and exhibited worldwide. In addition to her namesake line "Shelbi Nicole," she has collaborated with many major brands including the NFL Super Bowl, Kendra Scott, Vans, Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo, Café Bustelo, Budweiser, Thrillist, Lexus, NASA, Free People, Kimono Zulu, and more. She also manages a creative firm called Shelbi Nicole Designs that has helped create art for over 100 Houston businesses. Nicole works with the City of Houston on a number of public art projects and was one of the original artists selected to paint electrical boxes for the Mini Murals Project. In 2014, Houston Press named her one of "Houston's Top 10 Painters." She's also a creative director for RozenDove Luxury Scarves and designs textiles for the brand. Her most recent endeavor is launching her first 2 locations of the interactive experience Whimsy World in 2019. When she's not painting she serves as a social ambassador for #NasaSocial, The Greater Houston Partnership, #HoustonInsider for Visit Houston, and helps raise funds for a number of non profits through art sales. VIVIAN PASTOR'S work revolves around nature, the story of life and death alongside the delicate fragments of memory. She hand builds all of her work from a bag of clay, coil or slab. Every time she molds clay it is a deep reminder of her Mexican American heritage. Her work cultivates a passionate extension of her father Joseph Vasquez who was a humble tortilla maker; one of her fondest memories is helping him knead dough to make ends meet. Looking back into her childhood she believes her work's whimsical aesthetic is tied to her very limited time with her mother who was always in the garden. This culture now lives within her as she went from kneading dough to molding clay, and the honor and gratefulness she feels when she creates something from nothing.
