This class will explore diseases and their prevention, with an emphasis on the importance of public health. Nye will lead learners through an interactive exploration of how germs work and spread, what vaccines are and how they prevent disease, and the power that each person has to help minimize the spread of disease and ensure safety for themselves and others.

Nye commented, "Students are living through two historic events right now: a once-in-a-generation pandemic, and the creation of new kinds of vaccines to address it. I’m teaming up with Varsity Tutors to harness this unique teachable moment and show kids the power of science and global cooperation. It’s never been more clear that it’s in everyone’s best interest for each of us to stay healthy and safe. By developing critical thinking skills with regard to public health, I’m confident that today’s learners will embrace the science and prepare the world of the future for whatever comes next.”

“At Varsity Tutors, we seamlessly connect learners with subject matter experts, so we are thrilled to partner with an iconic expert and educator like Bill Nye and to connect him to tens of thousands of students," said Brian Galvin, Chief Academic Officer for Varsity Tutors. "Bill’s passion for making science fun and accessible is a perfect fit for our free StarCourse series and will make his Varsity Tutors class, on such an important topic, a can’t miss experience.”

In Spring 2020, Varsity Tutors launched its StarCourse initiative, a collection of exclusive classes taught by celebrity instructors and top experts across categories. Classes have been led by stars such as Coyote Peterson from YouTube’s Brave Wilderness; artist, designer, and creator James Lewis; physicist, professor, and string theorist Brian Greene; the Field Museum and many others. Varsity Tutors leverages its large group class learning platform to provide access to high-quality live instruction in academics, enrichment, and test prep at no cost to learners. This initiative fueled a newfound love of learning for more than 500,000 learners in 2020. Varsity Tutors currently holds the Guinness World Records title for Largest Online Science Class set in May 2020.
