Texas Original Compassionate Cultivation Drives Over 180,000 Miles to Deliver Medical Cannabis Across Texas

AUSTIN, Texas , August 05 /Businesswire/ - Texas Original Compassionate Cultivation (TOCC), Texas’ leading medical cannabis provider, today reported its drivers have thus far driven more than 180,000 miles in 2021 to deliver medical cannabis prescriptions directly to patients’ doorsteps throughout Texas. At this rate TOCC will likely log more than 300,000 miles on Texas roads in 2021. The significant milestone reflects one of many challenges TOCC and its patients still face under the tightly regulated Compassionate Use Program (CUP).

The CUP’s strict regulations require medical cannabis companies to store all inventory in one location and prohibits providers from shipping prescriptions to patients through the mail. In adherence to these regulations, TOCC dispatches its medical cannabis products from its facility in Austin, Texas, via its fleet of delivery drivers. TOCC’s drivers take frequent, long-distance trips across Texas to deliver medical cannabis to patient homes.

“Medical cannabis is arguably the most regulated industry in the state of Texas. As we anticipate the enactment of HB 1535 in September, there is still much to accomplish to enable increased access for patients,” said Morris Denton, TOCC’s CEO. “We point to our number of delivery miles as one of the proof points for necessitating a larger conversation on regulatory rules reform as it demonstrates the expensive and inefficient inconveniences of today’s CUP. TOCC is constantly advocating for new ways to better serve our patients and will continue to fight for increased accessibility to medical cannabis.”

In June 2021, the Compassionate Use Registry’s patient count rose to a reported 6,698 registrants under the CUP. TOCC anticipates its number of miles driven will continue to climb as demand for medical cannabis grows throughout Texas and the CUP expands to include all cancer patients and those suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder.

TOCC offers same-day pickup from its Austin facility and statewide delivery. Patients can also fill prescriptions at TOCC’s pick-up locations at physician offices in North Austin, San Antonio, Houston and Dallas.
