Veterans serve with The Mission Continues to Honor Dr. King's Legacy Through National Day of Service Projects
During the month of January, hundreds of veterans and volunteers will lead and support service projects across the country to mark the Martin Luther King Jr. National Day of Service and honor the legacy of Dr. King. Several elected officials are slated to attend including Secretary of the Environmental Protection Agency Andrew Wheeler and Acting Director of the Office of Management Budget Shalanda Young in Washington DC and Congressman Adam Smith (WA-09) in Seattle.

WASHINGTON, Jan. 14, 2022 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ -- During the month of January, hundreds of veterans and volunteers will lead and support service projects across the country to mark the Martin Luther King Jr. National Day of Service and honor the legacy of Dr. King.
The Mission Continues is organizing 40 in-person and "at home" service opportunities that combat food insecurity, bolster pandemic recovery, beautify public spaces, and connect veterans to each other and their neighbors in partnership with schools, public parks, youth organizations, homeless shelters, and more. The non-profit organization is also offering virtual service opportunities that can be completed within an individual household, including food and clothing drives and DIY-build projects that can be donated to local organizations.
Dr. King spoke about the ability of the average person to serve their community, and the importance of ending food insecurity and working together to achieve equality in our neighborhoods and communities. Veterans are uniquely suited to affect positive change.
"Our veterans and volunteers have long served with leadership, selflessness, and purpose in the face of adversity, and this year's Martin Luther King, Jr. National Day of Service is no exception," said Mary Beth Bruggeman, US Marine Corps veteran and President of The Mission Continues. "Challenges remain – battling an ongoing and evolving pandemic that has made the need to support our neighbors and communities more important than ever before. And it's in the spirit of what Dr. King taught us nearly 60 years ago that we step up for our communities that need us most, serving together, and inspiring each other along the way."
In Washington D.C., veteran-led volunteers will improve a roof top garden that provides fresh produce to the community as part of Washington D.C.'s efforts to combat food insecurity. Miami's Service Platoon is dedicated to environmental conservation and stewardship projects and will be support the Miami-Dade County Parks, Recreation, & Outdoor Spaces in a coastal clean-up and environmental service project at the Pelican Harbor and Island. The St. Louis Platoon will serve at the George Washington Carver Urban Farm, in an urban community farm in the heart of a historically underserved neighborhood and a food desert. Seattle's Service Platoon will engage in neighborhood clean-up projects for the Little Saigon business district and Rainier Beach. These are just two examples of 40 projects and opportunities to serve with The Mission Continues taking place in the days surrounding MLK Day 2022.
