Depression Cases Explode Among Young People and Women According to New ComPsych Data

CHICAGO , May 09 /Businesswire/ - ComPsych® Corporation, the world’s largest provider of mental health services and GuidanceResources® for life, today announced a new analysis uncovering trends related to depression among American workers. A sampling of more than 80,000 depression cases from its U.S. 2022 and 2023 book of business found nearly four in ten (38%) of depression cases were found in those aged 20-29, while 60% of cases were found in women across all age groups.

This trend comes despite depression now being the fifth most common presenting issue in the American workforce, while anxiety has skyrocketed to the number one issue nationally. In fact, previous ComPsych data showed that 24% of American workers who sought help for their mental health in 2023 did so due to anxiety.

“On the one hand, it’s encouraging to see that depression has decreased in prevalence across the American workforce,” said Dr. Richard A. Chaifetz, Founder, CEO and Chairman of ComPsych. “However, our data shows that’s not the case for everyone. Women make up six in ten depression cases and young adults account for nearly four in ten. As business leaders look to support their workers, I’d urge them to invest strategically in the groups who are struggling the most with this issue, emphasizing resources for younger age groups and in particular, women.”
