Presbyterians Open Ordination To Gays

NEW YORK -  The Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD) today lauded a decision by the Presbyterian Church (USA) to open ordination to gay and lesbian candidates.

"One of the most beautiful tenets of Christianity is the love for all people," said GLAAD President Jarrett Barrios. "Yesterday's landmark vote is a true affirmation of that principle. We're delighted that the Presbyterians have formally joined the millions of faithful Americans who welcome their gay and lesbian brothers and sisters just as they are."

Rev. Dr. Janet Edwards, one of the Presbyterian clergy that voted "Yes" to allow for more inclusive ordination, released the following statement after yesterday's vote:

"I am both overjoyed and humbled by today's vote in the Presbyterian Church (USA). Presbyterians across the country opened up their hearts to see that Christ's love embraces us all. I see this as an opportunity to build a stronger church. Faithful and qualified lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender Presbyterians will be able to openly serve the church with energy, intelligence, imagination and love."

The Presbyterian Church (USA) joins a host of other Protestant churches that have voted to accept gay and lesbian clergy and church leaders. Among them are the United Church of Christ, the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America and the Episcopal Church.

GLAAD's Religion, Faith & Values program works to elevate LGBT-affirming voices of faith in the media. In 2010, GLAAD worked to highlight progress made at the General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church (USA), and provided media resources to LGBT faith groups including Soulforce, More Light Presbyterians and That All May Freely Serve.
