THE BROTHERHOOD/SISTER SOL HONORS PROFESSOR CHARLES OGLETREE& ESMERALDA SANTIAGO

NEW YORK, -- On Thursday, May 6th, 2010 The Brotherhood/Sister Sol will hold the 6th AnnualVOICES gala at the Cedar Lake space in New York CityProfessor Charles Ogletree of Harvard University will receive theElla Baker and Cesar Chavez Award for Social Justice and Puerto Rican-born producer/writer, Esmeralda Santiago, will receive the Frida Khalo Award for Innovative Creativity at the event.  Esteemed CNN anchor and special correspondent,Soledad O'Brien, will be the host for the ceremony.

Now in its sixth year, VOICES serves the means to honor members of the local, national and international communities whose contributions have avenues through which our collective and individual voices can be heard.  The annual gala raises the necessary funds to continue the programming of The Brotherhood/Sister Sol organization, a Harlem-based nonprofit with a mission to empower Black and Latino young women and men and help them develop into critical thinkers and community leaders.  Past honorees have included Tony-Award winning director George C. Wolfe, entrepreneur and philanthropist Christopher Gardener, actor/director and political activist Danny GloverCesar Perales, President & Director Counsel, Latino Justice and Amalgamated Bank President & CEO, Derrick Cephas among others.

"VOICES highlights the innovative and ground-breaking work of The Brotherhood/Sister Sol," said Executive Director & Co-Founder, Khary Lazarre-White.  "It celebrates the powerful voices of our young people. It's an evening of celebration. We are so excited to feature and honor individuals whose achievements serve as inspiration for our members."

Established in 1995, The Brotherhood/Sister Sol is a nationally recognized Harlem-based 501(c)(3) organization that empowers and supports Black and Latino youth to speak their minds, acquire knowledge and skills, explore their identity and beliefs, and help make their dreams a reality. The organization has received numerous awards such as Oprah's Angel Network Award, New York State Education Department's Exemplary Advocacy Organization Award, The Ford Foundation's Leadership For A Changing World Award.
