"Speed Sisters" Team Host Breast Cancer Fundraiser at Howard Univ.

 SPEED SISTERS TEAM TO HOST FUNDRAISER BENEFITING THE 2009 WASHINGTON, DC BREAST CANCER 3-DAY

Local Retailers, Designers and Organizations Support Efforts to Fight Breast Cancer

Washington, DC (BlackNews.com) - Krystal Speed of Bowie, MD and Kendra Speed of Charlotte, NC have organized a fundraiser at Howard University's School of Divinity on Sunday, September 27 to raise money for the Washington, DC Breast Cancer 3-Day. October 16-18, the Speed sisters will join thousands of other dedicated women and men for the Washington, DC Breast Cancer 3-Day to raise awareness and funds for breast cancer. The three-day, 60-mile walk benefiting Susan G. Komen for the Cure® and the National Philanthropic Trust Breast Cancer Fund requires months of physical and financial preparation, challenge and triumph. Participants commit to raising $2,300 in order to participate and follow a four to sixth month physical training program.

"My mother passed away in 2005 after a 10 year fight against breast cancer. I decided to participate in the Breast Cancer 3-Day because of my family history and health risks. I wanted to make a personal difference to help fight the disease," said Kendra Speed. "With Susan G. Komen for the Cure and the National Philanthropic Trust as beneficiaries of the Breast Cancer 3-Day, I know I'm accomplishing this by helping ensure funding is available for important research, education and community health programs. I hope to exceed the fundraising goal with our fundraiser."

Breast cancer will affect one in eight women in the U.S. and breast cancer knows no boundaries--be it age, gender, socio-economic status or, more broadly, the state of the economy. Metro Area residents like Speed recognize the need for continued support of charitable causes as both a broad effort and for personal reasons alike.

"Despite the state of the economy, the outpouring of support thus far has been phenomenal," said Krystal Speed. "It is very rewarding to know my commitment has brought so many people together in support of our bold efforts to raise funds to end breast cancer."

Fashion for the Cure is not only a fundraiser for the Breast Cancer 3-Day, but is also a means of educating and empowering many through the arts. The fashion show highlights apparel from local retailers and designers, along with dramatic, vocal, and dance performances. By partnering with local businesses and organizations, Fashion for the Cure provides many ways for the community to contribute to a worthy cause. Tickets for the event are $15 in advance, $20 at the door. All proceeds will be donated to the Breast Cancer 3-Day event.
