Thurgood Marshall College Fund Names Chair
NEW YORK -- The Thurgood Marshall College Fund (TMCF), the strongest voice for the 47 Public Historically Black Colleges and Universities and 6 Law schools across the nation, has announced that John F. Lundgren, President and CEO of Stanley Black & Decker, will chair its 23rd Anniversary Awards Dinner on Monday, November 1, 2010 in the Grand Ballroom of the Sheraton New York Hotel & Towers. The event is a continuing tradition that began more than 20 years ago in the name of civil rights activist and Supreme Court Justice Thurgood Marshall. As the Thurgood Marshall College Fund's signature fundraising event, the annual Awards Dinner has, over the years, significantly advanced the organization's mission while championing academic excellence and supporting students at public Historically Black Colleges and Universities.
This year's Awards Dinner will recognize the achievements of some of the nation's foremost visionaries who promote diversity, leadership and community service. The 2010 Honorees include: Neil Golden, senior vice president, chief marketing officer, McDonald's USA, LLC; Rhonda Mims, president, ING Foundation & senior vice president, Corporate Responsibility and Multicultural Affairs; Kenneth Wilcox, senior vice president of sales, LALA USA; and Dr. George C. Wright, president, Prairie View A&M University. "The Thurgood Marshall College Fund is pleased to welcome John Lundgren as chair of our twenty-third anniversary Awards Dinner. The 23rd Anniversary Awards Dinner concludes TMCF's annual Anniversary Weekend, which also brings together more than 600 students from across the country for a Leadership Institute and Recruitment Conference. With over 100 corporations and government agencies participating, these students are provided an excellent opportunity to network with and learn from noted industry executives. Past TMCF Dinner chairs include John Esposito, president & CEO of Bacardi USA and Carl C. Dalstrom, president and CEO, USA Funds. About John F. Lundgren John F. Lundgren is President and Chief Executive Officer of Stanley Black & Decker, the company created upon The Stanley Works' 2010 acquisition of Black & Decker Corporation. Prior to joining The Stanley Works as Chairman and CEO in 2004, Mr. Lundgren was an executive officer with Georgia Pacific where he was responsible for its International Consumer Products Business. Mr. Lundgren began his business career in brand management in Boston at the Gillette Corporation, and has held positions in marketing, finance, manufacturing, corporate development and strategic planning in the USA and Europe with Georgia Pacificand predecessor companies. John F. Lundgren is a cum laude graduate of Dartmouth College in Hanover, NH holding an MBA degree from Stanford University in Stanford, CA. He lived and worked abroad in various locations for 14 years and is currently a member of the Board of Directors of Callaway Golf Company, NAM (National Association of Manufacturers), SIFE (Students in Free Enterprise) and is a National Trustee of The First Tee (an organization dedicated to the development of life-enhancing values for young people through golf and character education). Delivering Dreams., will take place on Monday, November 1, 2010, at The Sheraton New York Hotel and Towers, New York City. Highlights of the evening include a pre-dinner reception with members of the Board of Directors, Sponsors and Friends, followed by a seated dinner with the Awards Ceremony and special live performances. The evening's proceeds will benefit the Thurgood Marshall College Fund. The success of this event will enable TMCF to continue its work as a critical link between deserving students having greater access to higher education and the opportunity to become a part of a new generation of leaders. About the Thurgood Marshall College Fund The Thurgood Marshall College Fund, Inc., named for the late U.S. Supreme Court Associate Justice, was established in 1987 and represents 47 public Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) and 6 law schools located in 22 states and the US Virgin Islands with a population of over 235,000 students. Over the last 23 years, TMCF has awarded more than $100 million in leadership development, programmatic and capacity support, and scholarships enabling more than 12,000 students to attend public HBCUs. It is the only national organization of its type that provides merit-based scholarships and programmatic support to students attending the nation's public HBCUs. TMCF also provides internship programs and joins corporate and foundation partners in providing leadership training and support to students preparing for undergraduate and professional schools.
