Feds Settle With Ala School Board Over Racial Disparities

The U.S. Justice Department announced today that it has reached a settlement with the Pickens County, Ala., school board to eliminate racial disparities in its system. Under terms of the agreement, the board, working with state officials, will develop policies and programs to eliminate racial disparities in student discipline, grade retention, graduation rates and post-graduate scholarships, the Justice Department said in a release. The federal government has filed a housing discrimination lawsuit against the city of Joliet in Illinois. The lawsuit filed in Chicago claims Joliet hasn't offered an affordable housing plan to accommodate the mostly black residents who'd be displaced by the planned condemnation of the Evergreen Terrace housing complex.
